The African Business Trade Engagement Platform (ABTEP) is the brain child of the African Business Investment Network which was conceptualised to facilitate African SMEs trade expansion through networking. The realisation that a purely networking based approach was insufficient for achieving significant transformation led directly to the inception of ABTEP.

Africa stands at an inflection point, with the world's fastest-growing consumer market with an estimated 244 million businesses in 2020, a vast youthful population and immense natural capital. African SMEs repeatedly face the same binding capability constraints in the core 'business practices' domains that evidence has shown to be associated with survival, profitability and growth when training is designed to address these constraints.  Most virtual training stops at content delivery and yet, the challenge is not primarily about more theory but about adopting and sustaining practical business routines.
